Is Claressa Shields number one on the women's Pound for Pound list following Maricela Cornejo win?

Jun 02, 2023Jun 02, 2023

The victory was far from unexpected.

Claressa Shields impressed once again as she maintained her unbeaten record last weekend against Maricela Cornejo.

The late replacement was a game opponent but was outclassed and outboxed from the off, and was comprehensively defeated on points.

Shields was already No. 1 in the DAZN pound-for-pound rankings list and the manner of her victory gave no reason to adjust her position.

It is hard to see how Katie Taylor could dislodge her unless she puts in back-to-back wins over Chantelle Cameron and then Amanda Serrano, but with the American undisputed middleweight looking to continue her moves across divisions, she could impress even further.

One hope for other boxers might be for Shields to take a sabbatical to pursue MMA, opening up the belts and opportunities for others.
